Welcome back to the Mechas Verse Workbench, builders!

Did you hear the one about the blizzard that couldn’t stop a robot invasion? While Japan was digging out from record snowstorms this past weekend, the dedication of the mecha community proved unshakeable. Wonder Festival 2026 pressed on, bringing us some of the hottest news of the year—including a bombshell announcement that has the Armored Core community buzzing.

In this week’s edition (covering Feb 6–8), we’re diving into Bandai’s massive new ACVI kit, revisiting an 11-year-old Master Grade that still outshines the competition, and checking in on the latest 30MM custom creations. Whether you’re snipping plastic or just window shopping, we’ve got the intel you need.

Let’s dive in.

  • Big Reveal: The Armored Core VI boss Balteus is officially getting the model kit treatment! Shown at Wonder Festival, this SMP kit looks “chonky” and spectacular.

  • In-Depth Review: We take a look at the MG Wing Zero Ver. Ka. Why is an 11-year-old kit still considered an “absolute pleasure to build” in 2026?

  • Pro-Tip: Master the art of nub mark removal to make your builds look professionally finished.

  • Screen Time: A new First-Person Mod for Armored Core VI adds cockpit sway, bringing you closer to the pilot’s seat than ever before.

The Dropzone: New Model Announcements

The latest intel from Bandai, Kotobukiya, and beyond. Here’s what’s just been greenlit for production.

Notes

Build Experience

10/10

An “absolute pleasure” to build; intuitive and satisfying.

Engineering

9/10

Solid joint stability; wings transform beautifully despite age.

Detail & Molding

9/10

Katoki detailing holds up incredibly well 11 years later.

Accessories

8/10

Twin Buster Rifle is iconic, though effect parts are separate.

The Build

Released back in 2015, this kit remains a staple of the Master Grade line. Builders report that the engineering is timeless—snug fits, clear manual instructions, and a frame that supports the massive angel wings without drooping. It’s a reminder that newer isn’t always better.

The Look

Out of the box, the panel lines are sharp, and the color separation is excellent, minimizing the need for masking. The “Ver. Ka” aesthetic adds plenty of surface detail for washes and weathering, but it looks clean enough to display straight from the box.

The Finish

The white plastic takes topcoat evenly. For the wings, a simple panel wash brings out the mechanical flaps nicely. One builder noted that the transformation mechanism for the Neo-Bird mode is surprisingly robust for a kit of this age.

Verdict: Whether you are a first-time MG builder or a veteran looking for a relaxing weekend project, the Wing Zero Ver. Ka is a must-buy. It proves that engineering from a decade ago can still blow modern kits out of the water.

Masterclass: Flawless Nub Mark Removal

A clean build starts with the basics. Here’s our foolproof method for making nub marks disappear.

You’ll Need:

  • Single-Blade Nipper

  • Modeling Scriber or HSS File

  • Sanding Sponges (Grit: 400, 600, 1000)

  • Polishing Compound (Finish/Coarse)

Step-by-Step:

  1. The First Cut: Use your nippers to cut the part from the runner, leaving a small, flat nub.

  2. The Second Cut: Make a second, closer cut directly on the nub mark. This minimizes the stress mark on the plastic.

  3. File It Down: Gently use a modeling scriber or file to shave the remaining nub down flush with the surface.

  4. Sand It Smooth: Progressively sand the area with your sanding sponges, starting with the lowest grit and moving to the highest. This removes any scratches from the filing.

  5. Polish to Perfection: Apply a small amount of Tamiya compound to restore the plastic’s natural shine.

Spotlight: PG Unleashed Nu Gundam Airport Display

  • Manufacturer: Bandai Spirits

  • Material: ABS, POM, Die-cast

  • Scale: 1/60 Perfect Grade

  • Price Point: High-End Display (Not for sale)

A massive 1/60 PG Unleashed Nu Gundam has taken over a display at Chitose Airport in Japan. This isn’t just a kit; it’s a massive engineering marvel featuring the LED Psycho-Frame gimmick on a grand scale. It serves as a public testament to the accessibility and grandeur of the Gunpla hobby, turning a transit hub into a mecha museum. If you are flying through Hokkaido, it is worth the detour.

New “First Person Mod” for Armored Core VI

A new mod for Armored Core VI has hit the scene, adding a dynamic cockpit sway to a first-person perspective.

Summary: The mod places the camera directly inside the AC’s cockpit. What makes it special is the implementation of “dynamic sway”—the camera tilts and shifts as you boost and turn, simulating the G-forces acting on the pilot.

Relevance for Builders: This mod offers a new appreciation for the interior details of cockpits. It might inspire builders to scratch-build 1/144 or 1/100 pilot seats and instrument panels, knowing just how claustrophobic and intense the inside of an AC really is.

The Hangar: Community Spotlight

The best part of the hobby is the community. Here are some incredible builds from fellow enthusiasts.

This Week’s Feature: The Converted Skeptic

  • Builder: u/B_E_E_F_B_O_Y (Reddit)

  • Kit: HG 1/144 Calibarn

  • What’s Cool: “For a while now I’ve been a snob about never making high grades, but this kit has changed my mind.”

This builder admits to typically avoiding High Grade kits, but the Gundam GQuuuuuuX Calibarn won them over. The build showcases that with proper cleanup and panel lining, HGs can absolutely stand alongside their MG counterparts on the shelf.

Father-Son Diorama

  • Builder: u/Blissenhomie (Reddit)

  • Kit: Custom Diorama with Play-Doh & Model Grass

  • What’s Cool: A heartwarming collaboration where a 4-year-old directed the scene (“Char vs Granddad”) and the parent executed the terrain.

A beautiful reminder that the hobby spans generations. Using Play-Dough for structures and real rocks from the garden, this diorama captures the pure joy of creation.
